‘Gas and air’ (Entonox)

Entonox, or more commonly known as 'gas and air' is a mixture of oxygen and another gas called nitrous oxide. It is an analgesic which eases pain. It is inhaled through a mask or mouthpiece that you hold yourself.

If you attend antental classes which we strongly recommend then you will often have a chance to practise using the mask or mouthpiece. Entonox will not  take all the pain away, but it can make the pain more bearable. It is a birthing favorite because of how easy to use it is and also the sense of control that you get with it. As it only takes 15-20 seconds to work you breathe it in just as a contraction begins.

It is fask acting and wears off quickly. Although it can make you feel a little light headed there are no harmful side-effects for you or the baby. Some women also find that it makes them feel sick or drousy meaning they are unable to concentrate on what is happening but as it wears off so quickly, you can just stop using it.

If you try gas and air and find that it does not give you enough pain relief, you can ask for an injection as well.
